Gut Healthy Hot Chocolate

December 5, 2018

When I think cold December weather, I think of the cozy feeling of snuggling under a blanket and sipping on something warm like this cup of gut healthy hot chocolate. I gave your traditional cup of chocolate-y goodness a gut healthy twist by adding warm, healing spices and gut healthy goodies like @vitalproteins collagen peptides, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, and raw honey to it.

I used canned coconut milk because it provides not only healthy fats, but it makes the drink extra creamy and thick. But, really, any milk will do. Raw cacao, although having no sugar, can help increase your energy/mood, and is filled with antioxidants and magnesium. I love the bitterness of it, but that’s just me.

What makes this hot chocolate gut healthy?

Well first off, the collagen peptides. As you may have seen in my other recipes, I love adding collagen peptides wherever I can because the gut, skin, nail, and hair benefits are tremendous. Having an autoimmune disease like ulcerative colitis or crohns that affects your digestive system makes it hard to properly digest food. I can say from my own experience that the use of collagen has helped restore my gut lining and therefore, making it easier for me to digest food. I love that the collagen peptides are odourless and flavourless, so it’s super easy to add to any recipe…and the fact that my kids don’t even know it’s in there is a bonus!

Other gut healthy goodies?

Cinnamon and turmeric for their anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil and raw honey for their antibacterial properties, and ginger to help easy any digestive discomfort. I also find that using coconut oil in my warm beverages keeps me fuller longer.

Here is the recipe:

1 cup canned coconut milk
2 tablespoons raw cacao
¼ teaspoon @simplyorganicfoods ceylon cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric
1 tablespoon @nutiva coconut oil
1 tablespoon raw honey
1 scoop @vitalproteins collagen peptides

Directions:

  1. Warm the coconut milk on the stove
  2. Add all ingredients except the collagen peptides. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the mixture to your @vitamix or high speed blender
  4. Add the collagen peptides and blend until frothy

…and that’s it!

You can adjust this recipe to fit your taste..if you like more or less sweetness or spice, the choice is yours!

Enjoy!

MMMMMMMMMMMMM that sounds so good. Never thought to put turmeric or ginger in hot chocolate. I bet it tastes like drinking gingerbread cookies!
